Neal Martin with representatives of Châteaux Comtesse, La Conseillante & Figeac
Bordeaux remains one of the great references of the wine world, yet shows more facets than its reputation might suggest. Neal Martin presents Pichon Comtesse, Château-Figeac, and La Conseillante alongside those who lead them.
Neal Martin has engaged with Bordeaux for decades and counts among the formative critics of the region. In this Grand Opening, he presents three houses that stand for very different expressions of the classical wine region: Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac with Nicolas Glumineau, Château-Figeac in Saint-Émilion with Frédéric Faye, and Château La Conseillante in Pomerol with Marielle Cazaux.
The tasting traces origin, style, and ageing potential, and asks what makes great Bordeaux today: precision in the vineyard, clear identity in the cellar, and the ability to hold tension over decades.
Born in Britain, Neal Martin moved to Japan after completing his studies, where he initially worked as an English teacher. A later position with an importer sparked his interest in wine. He completed WSET Level 4, visited numerous wineries and launched wine-journal.com in 2003, which quickly reached 100,000 readers. In 2006, Robert Parker invited him to work as a critic for The Wine Advocate. In 2012, he published a book on Pomerol. Neal Martin left Robert Parker Wine Advocate in 2017. Since 2018, he has worked for Vinous, where he is responsible for Bordeaux, Burgundy, South Africa, Port, Tokaj and England.
