Why is wine suddenly so prominently in the focus of media and politics? Eric Asimov, Felicity Carter, and Dr. Laura Catena discuss studies, lobbying, culture, and how the wine industry can respond seriously.
Public discussion of alcohol has shifted noticeably in recent years. Health risks often take centre stage, frequently symbolised by a glass of wine. Yet who shapes this debate, which studies are cited, and how nuanced is the communication of their findings?
Felicity Carter analyses the political and media dynamics of the anti-alcohol movement, Dr. Laura Catena brings her perspective as a physician and winemaker, and Eric Asimov reflects on the cultural and societal meaning of wine. The panel asks how wine professionals can respond to new narratives with substance, responsibility, and credibility.
US American journalist Eric Asimov is the chief wine critic of The New York Times. In addition to his journalistic work, he is the author of How to Love Wine: A Memoir and Manifesto, published by William Morrow, as well as Wine With Food: Pairing Notes and Recipes From The New York Times, which he wrote together with Florence Fabricant and which was published by Rizzoli. A selection of his columns has also been published in The New York Times Book of Wine.
